Critical Questions

Critical Question #1

Living an ethical life makes Melbourne a fairer place?  Agree or Disagree?

I don’t believe that living an ethical life makes Melbourne a fairer place due to many reasons. If everyone was ethical it may make Melbourne better in some cases but not necessarily fairer.

Ethical is dealing with your morals and being ethical means you obey the law and do the right thing. If you are ethical it makes you honest and righteous. However, if you were always honest you may put certain people down by telling them the truth. For example, if I didn’t like someone’s work, the ethical thing to do is to tell them the complete truth. On the other hand, if I was to give them a positive with a negative, it could brighten their day instead of destroy it.

Fairness is when everything is equal and if there are results they have to be free from injustice and dishonesty.  I believe that Melbourne is fair especially in courts. I don’t believe that they are too harsh on the people that go to court particularly on first time offenders. I believe that is the way it should be. However, if they continue to repeat the offence I think they should be harsher on the criminals. I also think the criminals should be forced to go to rehabilitation or psychological classes so they can turn their life around.

Melbourne can be unfair in ways, as money makes a huge difference in your regular guy’s life. The richer get better lives and if they were to go to court, they would be able to afford better lawyers. Unlike someone poor who may not even be able to afford a lawyer. Melbourne is unfair in this way because the two people (the rich and poor) could’ve committed the same crime but different outcomes for each person, just because one of them could afford a better lawyer.

When I went to the car sharing services in Galileo it made me realise that if we all lived an ethical life it would make Melbourne better but not necessarily fairer. The car sharing services lowers the cars on the street which reduces space and pollution. It also saves the owner and the user money. This is an ethical thing that we could all do and it would help society.

I think Melbourne already is a reasonably ethical city. In that everyone gets to vote for the prime minister that they think would be the best at the job. No one forces you to vote for a particular party which is ethically correct. You have your own say and you can express your own opinion without being criticized.  That is one reason why I believe Melbourne is already a fairly ethical city.

Overall, I disagree, living an ethical life won’t make Melbourne fairer. People’s beliefs and morals will always be different and that is why the right thing for one person might be the wrong thing for another person. That is why I disagree.
